  • Couldn't tell between SV peasants and the Viet Cong
  • Soldiers became frustrated with the war that had no clear objectives
  • Lots of civilians, both NV and SV were killed in the process while being innocent
  • The American Soldier's War
    • There was propaganda that made Americans want to be soldiers in Vietnam
    • People were afraid of communism infiltrating their country and schools
    • The war was confusing and disturbing, and the SV was indifferent to their efforts
    • Fighting conditions were very bad in forests and tropical diseases
    • People could be friends or allies, don't know who to shoot
    • Viet Cong lacked technology and weapons, so they went for guerrilla warfare
    • People started to lose morale and the will to live, couldn't sleep
  • Vietnamese Civilians and the War
    • The war was even more devastating for civilians because the US killed civilians
    • Saturation bombing and fragmentation bombs tore both NV and SV apart
    • Chemical weapons like Agent Orange for leaves killed crops, trees, and people
    • Napalm was used that stuck to people, and burned them alive
    • Many civilians were caught between the Viet Cong and the US soldiers
  • The My Lai Massacre
    • 1968 the brutality of the war came out when exhausted soldiers reached village in SV
    • Rounded all the people up and killed them, suspected Viet Cong but all wom.&children
    • More than 100 innocent Vietnamese were killed, shocked Americans at home
