  • Urban population grew and grew and eventually became larger than the rural population
  • The invention of birth control created smaller families
  • Mass production produced smaller families
Cars, Capone, Teapot DomeCars were mass produced

  • Were a sign of affluence
  • Environmental hazard
  • Caused demand for cheap foreign oil
Oligopolistic companies took the lead

  • Provided worker benefits
  • Raw materials were traded with other countries
  • Business managers were trained
Advertisements

  • Companies highlighted "spending for pleasure"
  • Made Americans mass consumers
  • Era of Hollywood, jazz bands
  • Prohibition of alcohol failed
  • Organized crime rose, like Al Capone in Chicago
  • Scandals like the Teapot Dome Scandal
Conservatism

  • Americans didn't want immigrants anymore (Red Scare, Sacco and Vanzetti)
  • Blacks immigrated North for a better life but lived in segregated communities
  • Revival of the Ku Klux Klan
  • Struggle between fundamentalists and scientists
  • Downfall of unions because corporations were providing worker benefits
